The Central Valley is one of the best climates in the country for a heat pump. Our summers run long and hot, holding between 105 and 115°F for weeks, and our winters are mild and rarely stay below freezing. A heat pump is at its most efficient in exactly that kind of weather, so here it delivers strong cooling all summer and keeps up through our heating season. For homeowners who still want gas-furnace backup on the coldest, foggy mornings, a dual-fuel system runs the heat pump most of the year and only switches to the furnace when it makes sense.
Sizing is what separates a system that lasts from one that doesn’t. An oversized heat pump short-cycles and wears out early, and an undersized one can’t keep up in a Valley heat wave, so California’s Title 24 code requires a Manual J load calculation when a system is resized. A heat pump cools like a standard AC in summer and heats efficiently in winter, and because Valley winters rarely stay below freezing, it holds its efficiency through our heating season instead of dropping off the way it would in a cold-winter state. For the coldest mornings, a dual-fuel system adds a gas furnace as backup.
If your home has ductwork in good shape, a ducted central heat pump is usually the simplest whole-home upgrade. A ductless mini-split is the better fit when you want room-by-room control, your ducts are leaky or missing, or you’re conditioning an addition or a room that never gets comfortable. A well-installed, well-maintained heat pump typically lasts 12 to 15 years or more. Because it works in both seasons, regular maintenance matters more than it does for a heating-only or cooling-only system.
