Getting your home ready for the holidays

Holidays

It’s the holiday season now. So you’re likely getting set to host guests in your home. It’s traditional for many people to utilize twinkle lights and other Christmas decor to brighten their houses during this time. While decorating for the holidays, don’t forget your HVAC system is an important home appliance that also deserves attention.

Keeping items away from your heaters
Be careful when kids play near heating units. Keep an eye out to make sure that things such as wrapping paper and blankets aren’t near heating vents. Make sure you thoroughly check that there are no flammable items left near heaters or fireplaces, especially if you are leaving the house for an extended period of time.

Inspect your electrical hookups
It is a breathtaking sight to behold your kids laughing, singing, and jumping around their home while they play with Christmas decorations that include a twinkling of colored lights. Before you start hanging the lights and placing them up, however, you should thoroughly inspect each one, their plugs, cords, and electrical outlets. If you notice any damage to the string of lights you should replace the lights; also if you notice an outlet that looks worn or damaged you should contact an electrician to make repairs.

Check your HVAC filters
With the possibility of multiple guests coming over for the holidays you will want to make sure that your air filters are cleaned or have been replaced recently. Air quality can be improved in your living space and especially those who are suffering allergies or have asthma. An insufficient air filter will prevent the controlling of common household allergens, dust mites, bacteria, pet dander, and insects in your home.

Check your filters
Besides limiting airflow, dirty filters make it difficult for you to take full advantage of your HVAC equipment, which forces your system to work harder to keep the desired indoor temperature. If you have an air filter and change it according to the system recommendations, always replace it every 30 to 90 days.

Keeping your thermostat low
With your home full of people for the Thanksgiving or Christmas season and many activities taking place, it will be sure to heat. If you expect to have a lot of people over and cooking then lowering the thermostat before you get started will help save money on the electric bill and keep your home from getting too warm.

Having your HVAC Inspected
Asking to have your heating, heat pump, or furnace serviced won’t hurt! Think about making an appointment to improve your heaters, heat pumps, and furnaces before winter comes so you can keep your home warm and comfortable all season long.
HVAC inspections can help identify minor issues before they worsen. You can rest easy knowing that your HVAC system has been thoroughly inspected and is safe and ready for use.
