Signs Your Modesto AC Needs Repair

Call for a diagnostic if you notice any of these:

  • The house is still warm when you wake up
  • Warm or weak air from the vents
  • It runs all afternoon and never reaches the set temperature
  • It turns on and off every few minutes
  • Ice on the copper refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
  • Water pooling around the indoor unit
  • The outdoor unit hums or clicks, but the fan doesn’t spin

What Fails Most Often, by Refrigerant?

The label on your outdoor unit names its refrigerant, and that tells us a lot about what a repair will involve.

RefrigerantWhat usually failsWhat it means for the repair
R-22
Before 2010
Refrigerant leaks at coils and fittings, worn compressors, weak capacitorsFederal rules ended new R-22 production and imports in 2020, so a recharge uses reclaimed refrigerant and costs more. Small electrical repairs are still worth doing; a leak is usually the point to price a replacement.
R-410A
2010 to 2025
Capacitors and contactors, dust-packed outdoor coils, frozen indoor coils, condenser fan motorsParts and refrigerant are easy to get, and most of these are fixed in one visit.
R-454B or R-32
2025 and newer
Too new for a clear pattern; we check controls, sensors and airflow firstOften still under the manufacturer’s parts warranty. We’ll check before quoting.
Heat pumps and mini-splits
Any age
Reversing valves, clogged condensate drains, circuit boardsSame refrigerant rules as the rows above.

Common parts like capacitors and contactors ride on the truck.

What Does AC Repair Cost in Modesto?

Most AC repairs in Modesto, like a capacitor, contactor, thermostat or refrigerant recharge, run $150 to $600. Bigger jobs, such as an evaporator coil or a refrigerant leak repair, generally run $600 to $2,000. Your diagnostic fee goes toward the repair, and you approve the price before we start. If another company has quoted you a big repair or a new system, our second opinion is free.

When a repair would cost more than about half the price of a new system and the AC is 12 to 15 years old or older, replacement usually makes more sense. The $5,000 rule is a quick check on the same idea: multiply the system’s age by the repair cost, and past $5,000, compare replacement. If you do replace, your electric utility helps. Modesto Irrigation District currently pays $350 or $600 toward a qualifying high-efficiency central AC north of the Tuolumne River, and Turlock Irrigation District pays $500 south of it.

How Hard Does a Modesto AC Work?

A Modesto AC does most of its year’s work in four months. The city averages about 90 days a year at 90°F or hotter and about 18 days at 100°F or more, and July afternoons average 95°F. The nights help: July lows average about 63°F, so a working system should pull the house back down by morning. If yours can’t, it’s either failing or too small for the house, and both are worth a diagnostic before the next heat wave.

Valley dust is the other strain. It packs into outdoor coils over the summer, and a clogged coil makes the compressor run hotter and longer. A spring tune-up clears it, and our VIP Maintenance Plan puts one on the calendar for you. We cover all of Modesto, plus Salida and Empire on the same daily routes.

Modesto AC Repair FAQs

Same day during the summer whenever the schedule allows, and no-cooling calls go to the front of the line. The shop is about 20 minutes away, and a person answers (209) 632-7596 around the clock.

Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool, below the room temperature, with working batteries. Check the breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, then the filter, since a clogged one can freeze the coil. If you see ice, turn the AC off and let it thaw before we arrive.

If the AC is running but not cooling, turn it off so a struggling compressor doesn’t fail completely. Close the blinds on the sunny side of the house. Fans help, but Stanislaus County warns they won’t prevent heat illness once it’s in the high 90s. If someone in your home is elderly, very young or ill, the county’s heat page lists cooling zones and its heat hotline, 211.

Yes, every major brand. In cooling mode, a heat pump fails much like a central AC. If your heat pump won’t heat in winter, see furnace and heating repair in Modesto; the same techs handle both.

After your AC shuts off, wait at least 3 minutes before turning it back on. That gives the refrigerant pressures time to even out, so the compressor doesn’t try to start against a heavy load. Many thermostats build in a short delay for this reason. If the AC trips off again soon after a restart, leave it off and call us.
